Los Angeles is one of the most popular cities in California to visit, and for good reason! It’s home to countless restaurants, hotels, and great spots for nightlife. The city has no shortage of budget-friendly activities either – here are 7 memorable, totally free things to do!
1. Stroll Along The Venice Canals
Enjoy a slice of Venice with a trip to Los Angeles’s Venice canals. Located near Venice Beach, the area consists of four canals. Each is about a quarter-mile long. Lined with lush trees and beautiful walking paths, a visit here is a great way to spend a peaceful afternoon.
2. Relax At Malibu Lagoon State Beach
Malibu Lagoon State Beach is a gorgeous, sandy beach located near the Santa Monica mountains. It features a number of reasons making it worth a visit. Check out the historic Adamson house – open for public tours on Fridays and Saturdays. Learn more about the area at the Malibu Lagoon Museum. Or enjoy a stroll and take in the beautiful coastline along the beach’s shores – either way, this is a great way to spend an afternoon!
3. Check Out The Hollywood Walk Of Fame
If you’re looking for something fun, free, and memorable to do in Los Angeles, why not check out the iconic Walk Of Fame? Located on Hollywood Boulevard, this attraction has drawn crowds for decades. It features the names of various notable and famous figures and can be a great spot for a picture next to your favorite actor’s star, or just a curious stroll to see the stars for yourself.
4. Enjoy The View From Griffith Observatory
Griffith Observatory overlooks the city below, and is the perfect free afternoon outing! It’s also an excellent spot to take some pictures for Instagram (or just to share with family and friends). This is especially true if you’re able to go to the grounds early or on workdays, so as to avoid some of the crowds. The grounds and roads are generally open every day, with the facility itself open Friday-Sunday. While avoiding the crowds is a bonus for a weekday visit, visiting during the weekend when the inside of the observatory is open to the public is also a great idea. In addition to taking in gorgeous views, you can also check out the observatory’s telescopes and planetarium.
5. Visit The Hollywood Sign
A visit to see the iconic Hollywood sign is practically a requirement for your first trip to L.A., and can still be a fun outing even if you’re familiar with the city. There are multiple ways to view the sign too, depending on your desired experience. If you enjoy hiking, there are three trails of varying difficulty leading up to the sign. The easiest is the Mt. Hollywood route, which is friendly enough to be accessible to families with children. It does still feature incline in some areas, so close-toed shoes may be the best fit for this adventure.
6. Stop By The Getty Villa Museum
If you’re a lover of art, or you’re looking for a memorable and educational stop, consider checking out the Getty Villa Museum. Part of the Getty, it features notable historic works by artists such as. In addition to viewing artworks, you’ll also want to leave some time to take in the grounds themselves – regal white pillars and sparkling ponds make the villa itself as much as a piece of art as the pieces inside it. Admission is free, but timed reservations are currently required if you do want to visit.
7. Explore The Venice Beach Boardwalk
Here’s another iconic – and free – attraction in the Venice Beach area! This historic boardwalk has been a popular spot to visit in Los Angeles for decades. You can look forward to views of the ocean, vibrant and varied street performances, and check out some of the public art such as murals in the area. The boardwalk also has plenty of options for food nearby if you feel a bit snack-ish – though this part isn’t free, there are options for the majority of price ranges.
