An 8-year-old boy was airlifted back to his home state of Colorado after a horse dragged him while on a family trip in Belize, relatives said.

Stefan Keryan was on a cruise with his family during the tragic incident, according to Denver 7. One of the stops on the cruise was Belize and the family decided to visit a monkey sanctuary and go horseback riding.

“I heard yelling, and I looked over. I see this horse coming from where everybody goes to go on the trail or whatever back down the road towards us,” the boy’s mother told Denver 7. “And as it’s running past I see that the saddle is flipped, and my son is being dragged by his foot.”

Stefan suffered “third degree friction burns and head trauma” from the incident, according to a Facebook post from his mother.

“My family and I were on what was a beautiful cruise until this happened and now my baby is fighting for his life,” his mother said. “He told us that he does not want to die and we need your help to help increase his chances of survival.”

The boy’s family didn’t know how to get him back home because he needed medical personnel to be checking his vitals and oxygen levels, according to KDVR.

“I was shocked and my heart was broken and I was scared for him and scared for the situation and I felt like we urgently needed to have a plan moving forward to help him all hands-on deck,” the boy’s teacher, Carisa Olmos, told KDVR.

After hearing about the boy’s need to get back to Colorado, Peak Medevac, a Colorado-based air ambulance company, offered to airlift the boy back home for free, the company told McClathy News.

“We are happy we could help this little guy get back home to Denver,” Peak Medevac said in a post on Facebook.
